Chapter 1 - The Trapdoor in the Grand FoyerThe air in the grand foyer smelled of beeswax and cold Italian marble, a polished scent designed to conceal decay. Julian Vance knelt on the stone, his black suit straining against his shoulders as his knuckles brushed the edge of the flush brass seam. For three years, he had walked across this floor believing his wife, Clara, had abandoned their daughter and vanished into the European countryside.

Beside him stood four-year-old Lily, her small thumb wedged loosely in her mouth, her braided blonde hair catching the shimmer of the crystal chandelier overhead. Her pink ruffled hem fluttered against Julian’s knee.

"Mommy is in there," Lily repeated, her voice fragile, barely a ripple in the stillness of the seventy-room estate.

Julian lifted the hatch. The hinges did not creak; they were oiled, maintained, and active. Beneath the marble lay a vertical shaft of damp concrete, smelling faintly of lye and stale water. In the shadows below, a face upturned toward the light—pale, bruised, with sunken hazel eyes that once held the sunrise.

"Clara?" Julian breathed. His lungs forgot how to pull air.

From the bottom of the pit, Clara did not scream. Long isolation strips a person of noise; she merely exhaled a jagged sob that vibrated through the stone.

Julian’s shock hardened into a terrible, frigid clarity. Behind him, boots clicked in synchronized precision against the parquet. Julian did not look back immediately. He traced the smooth edge of the trapdoor with one finger, memorizing the geometric cruelty of his own ancestral home.

He turned slowly. Two men stood at the base of the sweeping mahogany staircase: Marcus and Bennett, private security detail hired fifty years ago by Julian’s late father and kept on retainer by the estate board.

"Nobody leaves this house," Julian whispered. The order did not echo; it cut straight through the foyer, pinning the men where they stood.

Damp air clung to their skin as Julian, holding Lily tightly to his chest, followed Bennett’s flashlight beam through the narrow passageway. Clara walked supported by Julian’s arm, her breathing shallow but steady.
