Chapter 3 - Out of the DarkBennett moved first. Years of military discipline clashed with the sudden reality of a starving woman held captive beneath a dining hall. Without a word to Marcus, he broke formation, stroking down the eastern corridor toward the maintenance cellar. Marcus stepped forward, hand reaching beneath his lapel, but Julian closed the distance in two strides, his shoulder driving into Marcus’s chest with all the momentum of a man whose world had just collapsed.

The two men tumbled onto the marble. Julian’s rage was not chaotic; it was surgical. He pinned Marcus’s wrist against the stone, driving his knee into the guard’s sternum until the sidearm clattered across the polished floor.

"You guarded this room every single evening," Julian hissed through clenched teeth. "You listened to my daughter ask why her mother never said goodbye, knowing she was breathing five feet below our shoes."

Marcus grimaced, blood flecking his lip. "Orders survive men, Mr. Vance. Your father paid us to keep the foundation sealed."

Bennett returned, carrying a heavy nylon hoist and harness. He ignored Marcus on the floor, securing the anchor points into the steel load loops embedded along the hatch frame. Julian rolled off Marcus, kicking the firearm down the corridor, and grabbed the winch.

When Clara emerged into the electric glare of the chandelier, she shielded her eyes, trembling violently. Julian caught her before her bare feet touched the marble. She weighed almost nothing; her hospital gown was stiff with grit, her golden hair knotted and dull.

"Julian," she wept into the hollow of his neck. "They told me you agreed to it. They told me you were the one who signed the commitment papers."

"Never," Julian choked, tears burning against his windburned cheeks. "Never."
