The Vance estate had been completely leveled by court order; the land was being converted into a public nature preserve and freshwater watershed, funded by the liquidated accounts of the corporate board. Not a single trace of the grand mansion remained except for the red oak trees along the drive.

In a small coastal town in Maine, far removed from the predatory circles of high finance, a small gray clapboard cottage overlooked the Atlantic.

Julian stood on the back porch, wearing a worn denim shirt and canvas trousers, a carpenter’s pencil tucked behind his ear. He was restoring the weatherboards along the seaward wall. The work was honest, exhausting, and completely free of the hollow politeness that had characterized his previous life.

Inside the kitchen, Clara was rolling out dough for bread, her skin having regained its healthy warmth, her laughter ringing out across the porch as Lily chased a rescue terrier through the garden beds.

Bennett lived three miles down the road, working as a harbormaster at the local marina. The past had not disappeared—scars remained on Clara’s wrists and in the subtle ways Julian still checked door locks before turning off the lights—but the terror had lost its authority.
