Chapter 8 - The River of AshThe freezing waters of the Millstone River hit Julian like needles. He gripped Lily tightly above the surface, his boots slipping against the mossy shale bed as they pulled themselves onto the muddy northern bank. Clara fell to her knees in the wet grass, coughing violently, her fingers digging into the rich loam of the earth.

For the first time in three years, Clara was beneath open sky.
Above them, gray storm clouds were beginning to break, revealing patches of sharp autumn twilight. The scent of pine and wet pavement replaced the oppressive stench of damp limestone.
"We keep moving," Julian said gently, helping Clara up. "There’s an abandoned railway crossing two miles north. Freight trains slow down at the junction."
"Daddy, are we playing hide and seek?" Lily asked, her teeth chattering beneath her soaked dress.

Julian wrapped his heavy wool suit jacket around her tiny frame, tucking her cold hands inside the cuffs. "No, sweetheart. We’re heading home. The real home."
They moved through the dense brush, guided only by the distant amber glow of highway sodium lights. Clara’s steps grew firmer with each mile; the sheer instinct to survive for her child was burning through years of atrophy. Every time she stumbled, Julian was there, his arms steadying her, their breathing falling into a synchronized cadence forged through survival.
