Chapter 12 - The Deposition of TruthThe federal conference room was sterile, illuminated by fluorescent tubes that made Clara’s skin look even paler. Yet, as she sat before three federal prosecutors and two forensic accountants, her posture straightened with an iron resolve.

Julian sat directly beside her, refusing to leave her side despite administrative protests from the marshals. Lily sat in the corner, happily coloring on yellow legal pads with highlighters provided by a sympathetic clerk.

For six straight hours, Clara laid out the network. She detailed names, shell corporations, hidden holding companies, and the exact coordinates of environmental contamination sites that Sterling’s board had covered up across three states. Bennett corroborated the structural security measures, submitting security logs detailing unauthorized entries and falsified medical isolation orders.

The micro-SD card proved unimpeachable. Every ledger matched offshore bank registries down to the decimal point.

"Mr. Vance," the lead prosecutor said, turning his gaze toward Julian. "Given your inheritance rights, signing this testimony into the official court record means the Vance estate will be seized under civil asset forfeiture. Every home, trust account, and parcel of land will be liquidated to pay restitution to the affected municipalities."

Julian looked at Clara, who offered a faint, serene smile, and then at Lily, who held up a drawing of a lopsided house with a giant yellow sun.

"Sign it," Julian said without a heartbeat of hesitation. "Take the land. Take every stone. My family isn't made of mortar."
