Chapter 9 - The Safe HavenBy midnight, they reached an old grain silo adjacent to an unused rail spur. The dry timber smelled of straw and dust, offering shelter from the rising wind. Julian managed to pry open a service door, settling Clara and Lily into a corner shielded from drafts by stacked pallets.

Lily had finally succumbed to exhaustion, curled up in Julian’s coat, her chest rising and falling evenly.

Clara leaned her head against Julian’s shoulder. The luxury of physical touch was overwhelming; she kept checking her own hands, as if afraid the solid wood of the barn might dissolve back into damp bunker walls.

"Julian," she whispered. "Arthur Sterling didn't just want the trust money. He needed the municipal contracts for the harbor development. Your father refused to sign the approvals before his stroke. Sterling knew that if I examined the deeds, I’d see the town’s water reserves were being deeded over to industrial dumping sites."

Julian closed his eyes, a deep ache settling in his chest. "My father wasn't an innocent man, Clara. But he wasn't a monster who would lock you away. Sterling took advantage of his dementia in those final months."

"Your father knew," Clara said softly, with no malice, only sorrow. "He didn't order the trapdoor, but when Sterling installed it, your father chose silence to preserve the family name. The Vance legacy was always more real to him than flesh and blood."

Julian looked at Lily’s sleeping face. "The legacy ends tonight. Only the family remains."
