Chapter 14 - The Stolen Letters Returned

A week later, back at the coastal cottage, a calm autumn breeze rustled the orange leaves outside the study window. Maya sat at the antique desk, looking at the four letters Julian had retrieved from the safe months ago.
Julian walked in carrying two cups of spiced tea. He set one before her and took a seat opposite.
"I want you to have them," he said gently. "They belong to you."
Maya traced her fingers over the faded ink of the earliest letter, dated four years ago, written from a damp basement apartment while morning sickness had wracked her body.
"Do you know what hurts the most about these?" she whispered.
"Tell me," Julian replied, leaning forward, willing to bear whatever pain she needed to voice.
"It wasn't the poverty," Maya said, looking up with tears glistening in her eyes. "It was the belief that the man I loved had looked at my heart, weighed it against his fortune, and decided it wasn't worth anything. For four years, I felt entirely discarded."
Julian reached across the desk, covering her trembling hands with his warm, calloused palms. "Every night I spent away from you was a prison of my own making, Maya. I thought you abandoned me. We were both grieving a ghost that never died."
He pulled a small velvet box from his pocket and set it beside the letters.
"I am not asking you to marry the past," Julian said softly. "I am asking you to let me spend every tomorrow proving that you and our children are the only wealth that ever mattered to me. If you need another year, five years, or the rest of our lives... I will wait."
May you like
Maya looked at the box, then up into the eyes of the man who had torn down a multi-billion-dollar empire just to restore honor to her name. She shook her head with a soft, radiant smile.
"I don't need five years, Julian," she whispered, sliding her hand into his. "We’ve lost enough time already."
