Chapter 4 - Shadows of the Legacy

The rain outside drummed violently against the high diamond-paned windows of the study. Clara sat curled in the corner settee, silent and disgraced, while Maya sat on the edge of an armchair, drawing both children into her lap.
"Why are you here today, Maya?" Julian asked quietly, closing the folder with reverent slowness. "If you thought I abandoned you, why come to the memorial service today?"
Maya smoothed Iris’s light curls. "Because Arthur’s estate lawyers contacted me. When he died, his will had a codicil. He left a sealed trust for 'any unrecognized heirs,' with a condition that I present the children in person before the board of executors by five o'clock today, or the funds would be reabsorbed into the family foundation."
Julian's eyes darkened. "He knew. Even on his deathbed, he wanted to orchestrate the humiliation. He wanted you to crawl before the family board to beg for their birthright."
"I didn't come to beg," Maya said with quiet pride. "I came to sign the waiver of rights. I brought them here to look his portrait in the face, sign away their claim to his blood money, and prove to myself that we survived without a single cent from the Vance dynasty."
Noah leaned against Maya's collarbone, watching Julian with sharp curiosity. "Is that baby my brother?" he asked suddenly.
Julian looked down at Leo, then over to Noah. "Yes, Noah. He is your brother."
"Why does he look so small?" Iris asked, emboldened by Noah’s question, pointing a tiny finger at Leo’s swaddle.
"Because he’s only two weeks old," Julian answered softly. "And he’s scared. Just like I am."

Noah looked at his mother for permission, and when Maya offered a gentle nod, the boy took three hesitant steps toward Julian. He reached out and touched Leo’s tiny, curled fist. The infant responded by clamping his minute fingers around Noah’s index finger.
A profound stillness fell over the study. Maya closed her eyes, the bitter fortress she had built around her heart crumbling under the undeniable bond of blood and innocence before her.
