Chapter 6 - An Uneasy Haven
When the house cleared, the sprawling estate felt vast, echoing, and stripped of its former suffocating authority. Maya stood near the French doors overlooking the manicured gardens, watching sheets of rain sweep across the roses.
"You can't stay in New York in that tiny flat anymore," Julian said, coming up behind her, keeping a respectful distance. "Not because I want to control you, Maya. But because they are my children, and I want to spend every remaining day of my life earning the right to be called their father."
"You don't buy your way back into their lives, Julian," Maya replied without turning. "A signature on a board resolution doesn't erase four years of feverish nights, broken water pipes, and wondering if I could afford their school supplies next term."
"I don't expect it to," he murmured. "I know money means nothing to you. If it did, you wouldn't have come here today to sign away a forty-million-dollar trust."
Maya turned, looking at him thoughtfully. "Why didn't you marry someone else before Helena? Why wait three years?"
Julian gave a self-deprecating, bitter smile. "Because every time I looked at another woman, I saw you standing in the rain at the train station the day I thought you walked away from me. I thought you chose a life without me because I wasn't enough. Arthur was a master at crafting lies. He showed me fake bank transfers, fake flight manifests showing you had left the country with another man."
Maya gasped, the sheer magnitude of Arthur Vance's calculated evil sinking deep into her bones. "He told me you had boarded a private jet to Zurich with an heiress, and that if I ever contacted you, he would ensure my mother’s medical care was canceled."
