Chapter 2 - The Fireplace in the Study

Julian did not shout. The dangerous part of Julian Vance had never been loud; it was an icy, focused stillness that made men twice his age surrender in business arbitrations.
"Clara," Julian said, his eyes still fixed on the balcony above. "Come down here."
"Julian, please, you don't understand how it was back then—" Clara’s voice shook from the shadow of the upper corridor. "Grandfather said she was an opportunist. He said you had to focus on the merger or the family foundation would collapse!"
"Come down."
Clara descended slowly, her designer heels clicking timidly on each marble step. With every pace she took, Maya moved Noah and Iris a fraction of an inch behind her frame, an instinctual shield forged over four years of solitary survival.
"Tell me where they are," Julian demanded, gently adjusting the infant against his chest with one arm while pointing a finger directly at his sister. "Don't lie to me, Clara. If you lie to me now, you lose your brother forever."
Clara’s veneer shattered. Tears carved paths through her immaculate makeup. "Grandfather didn't burn all of them... I saved four. I couldn't watch him put the ultrasounds into the fireplace. I kept them in the locked safe in the library. Behind the portrait."
Julian stepped closer, his jaw clenching so hard the corded muscle stood out along his neck. "You kept the proof of my children's existence locked in a wall safe while I spent four years believing Maya took a payout and vanished?"
"I was terrified of him, Julian!" Clara sobbed, collapsing onto the bottom step. "He threatened to cut all of us out of the trust!"
"He is dead, Clara," Julian whispered harshly. "Arthur Vance died six months ago. And you had six months to tell me I had a son and a daughter living somewhere in this world without a father."
Iris whimpered softly, alarmed by the tension. Noah tugged hard on Maya’s gown.
"Mommy," Noah whispered, his small voice echoing into the high rafters. "I want to go home now. This house smells like cold smoke."

Julian flinched as if struck. Slowly, he knelt on one knee, despite holding the infant in his arms, bringing his eyes level with the little boy. "Noah... Iris. I am—"
"Don't," Maya said, her hand rising in a firm stop. "Do not make promises in a house built on deceit. You hold your newborn son from a marriage your grandfather arranged to satisfy his legacy. You have your life, Julian. Let us walk out this door."
