Chapter 3 - The Brass Key

"Maya, wait. Look at me." Julian stood up slowly, careful not to jostle little Leo. His eyes pleaded with an intensity she had never seen during their courtship. "I didn't marry Helena because I loved her. She passed during childbirth two weeks ago. This child has no mother. And my twins have grown up without a father. If you walk out into the rain right now, you are punishing me, but you are also robbing them of the truth."

Maya looked at the infant, whose tiny hand reached blindly out from the lavender blanket. Her heart, hardened by years of working double shifts at a small design studio in upstate New York, cracked despite her resolve. She had spent nights weeping over unpaid utility bills while holding her toddlers, cursing Julian's silence, never imagining the suffocating web of family cruelty that had ensnared them both.

"Open the safe," Maya demanded flatly. "Show me what you kept."

Julian led the way down the echoing corridor toward the private library. Clara followed behind like a condemned prisoner, trembling, clutching an old brass key pulled from a hidden chain beneath her gown.

The library was dominated by dark mahogany shelving and the imposing oil painting of patriarch Arthur Vance. Clara reached behind the gilded frame, inserted the brass key into a panel, and swung the hidden heavy iron door open.

Inside lay a single leather-bound folder. Julian pulled it out with trembling fingers. When he flipped it open, Maya’s breath caught in her throat.

There lay her handwriting—fading blue ink on cheap stationery. Attached to the top letter was a grainy black-and-white sonogram printout showing two tiny beans side by side. Across the top, written in her youthful, hopeful hand four years ago, were the words: Julian, they have your heartbeat. Please come home.

Julian stared at the page, a single tear spilling over his dark lashes and splashing against the corner of the faded paper. He sank into a high-backed leather chair, staring at the sonogram as if trying to memorize every contour.

"I gave up looking for you," Julian choked out, looking up at Maya with unvarnished grief. "I thought you hated me. I drank myself into numbness, signed whatever papers Arthur pushed in front of me, agreed to a hollow arrangement with Helena... while you were carrying my whole world on your back."
