Chapter 10 - The Infiltration

The small electric motor hummed silently beneath the surface, pushing the flat-bottom skiff through the black marsh waters toward the concrete pylons of Terminal Nine. The fire at Clara’s boathouse burned like a beacon behind them, drawing two emergency sirens from the mainland, but Julian kept his eyes fixed forward, navigating by memory through the labyrinth of rotting pilings.

Maya knelt in the bow, her eyes adjusted to the dark. The Vance Mariner rose out of the black water like an iron cliff, its immense hull towering sixty feet above their heads. High above, on the ship’s main deck, yellow work lights cut through the drizzle, illuminating half a dozen armed men patrolling the gangways.

""The pump house intake is ten feet beneath that catwalk,"" Julian whispered, pointing toward a rusted iron grate set into the concrete bulkhead. ""The high tide has submerged the lower half, but there's a two-foot pocket of air at the top.""

They tied the skiff off to a wooden dolphin piling, slipping into the black water with barely a ripple. The cold was brutal, but adrenaline masked the shock. Maya followed Julian’s broad shoulders as they swam beneath the catwalk, ducking under the iron grate where the bars had long since corroded away into brittle teeth.

They pulled themselves up into the pump house sump—a cavernous, echo-filled chamber beneath the drydock where colossal cast-iron pipes hummed with idle hydraulic pressure. Julian hauled himself onto the steel grating, his muscles corded and glistening with oil, then reached down and lifted Maya effortlessly out of the water.

""Where is the charter kept?"" Julian asked, wiping sea grime from his eyes.

""Arthur’s private quarters behind the secondary bridge,"" Maya replied, catching her breath. ""The emergency escape trunk runs directly from the keel shaft to the captain's safe room. He designed it during the union wars so he could access the ship's physical logs without passing through the crew mess.""

""That trunk has been welded shut for five years,"" Julian said.

Maya reached into her pocket, pulling out the Montblanc pen once more. She twisted the gold clip three times to the left until a tiny hardened titanium steel pin extended from the cap. ""Not welded. Bolted with a custom keyway Arthur installed himself. He told me before he died: The pen writes the law, but it also opens the door.""

Julian looked at the tiny instrument, a faint, humorless smirk touching his lips. ""The old man was completely paranoid.""

""He was surviving,"" Maya said coldly. ""Just like we are.""

Before they could reach the access ladder, the heavy steel door at the top of the gantry clanged open, and Evelyn Cross stepped onto the metal platform above them, flanked by three men in black tactical gear, an umbrella held delicately over her blonde hair.
