Chapter 13 - The Living Charter

The stateroom was frozen in time. A thick layer of maritime dust coated the mahogany desk, the brass chronometer mounted on the wall, and the green leather armchairs where Arthur Vance had conducted his most secretive business. The smell of dried pipe tobacco and stale salt air lingered in the room, untouched by Evelyn’s cleaning crews.
Maya walked straight to the wall behind the desk, where a framed navigation chart of the North Atlantic hung beneath a dimmed brass sconce. She lifted the frame aside, revealing a small, archaic mechanical safe set into the structural steel of the bulkhead.
""Combination?"" Julian asked, standing guard by the stateroom door, his hand resting on a heavy steel fire axe he had pulled from the wall rack.
""Not a combination,"" Maya said.
She took the Montblanc pen, unscrewed the gold nib entirely, and inserted the threaded end of the barrel into the center of the safe’s dial. She turned the barrel three full rotations to the right, pressed down until a distinct chime sounded within the mechanism, and turned the heavy brass handle.
The heavy door swung outward with a faint groan of hinges.
Inside lay a single, leather-bound portfolio stamped with the Vance family seal—an anchor wrapped in briars. Maya opened it with trembling fingers. Resting inside was the original, embossed living trust charter of Vance Maritime, bearing the blue-ink signature of Arthur Vance, fully notarized by the state supreme court, establishing an unalterable irrevocable co-trusteeship between Julian Vance and Maya Elena Vance.
Attached to the final page was a handwritten letter in Arthur's sprawling, elegant script:
“To my son and daughter: A house divided by greed falls, but blood bound by truth cannot be bought. Reclaim what is yours.”

""It's here,"" Maya whispered, tears stinging her eyes for the first time since she had walked into the banquet hall. ""Every share. Every voting right. It was never Evelyn's to take.""
The heavy stateroom door groaned, and the electronic lock shattered with a high-pitched spark. The door swung open, and Evelyn Cross walked in, holding a small, silver .22 caliber pistol leveled directly between Maya’s eyes.
