Chapter 14 - The Final Clause

Evelyn stepped into the room, her eyes locked onto the leather-bound portfolio in Maya’s hands. Her face was pale, stripped of all its earlier aristocratic arrogance, replaced by the frantic, cornered rage of someone watching an empire crumble before her eyes.
""Drop it,"" Evelyn said, her voice shaking slightly, the tiny pistol trembling in her manicured hand. ""Drop the book, Julian, or her brains will be all over your father's desk.""
Julian stepped away from the wall, the heavy fire axe dangling loosely in his right hand. ""You shoot her, Evelyn, and the noise brings every harbor police unit currently circling the terminal. You think your private mercenaries will stick around for a murder charge?""
""They don't have to,"" Evelyn spat, her red lipstick looking grotesque against her bloodless skin. ""The ship is already wired with scuttling charges in the bilge. The timer has three minutes left. You die in the explosion, the charter burns with the ship, and I walk out as the sole surviving claimant to the maritime leases.""
""There's just one problem with that, Evelyn,"" Maya said calmly, stepping forward, holding the open charter in front of her chest like a shield.
""Shut up!"" Evelyn screamed, cocking the hammer of the pistol.
""Under Clause Twelve of the Vance Trust Charter,"" Maya said, her voice steady and clear, echoing through the silent room, ""the scuttling or intentional destruction of any primary corporate asset automatically invalidates all pending mergers, acquisitions, and debt transfers, reverting all company assets directly to the State Maritime Board for forensic review.""
Evelyn froze. ""What?""
May you like
""Arthur knew you would try to sink the ships,"" Julian said, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. ""He wrote the poison pill twenty years ago. The moment this hull breaches, every dollar you leveraged to buy my board members defaults instantly. Your family is bankrupt by morning, Evelyn.""
Evelyn’s eyes darted wildly between the paper and Julian’s advancing frame. Her finger tightened on the trigger—and in that split second, Maya whipped the heavy brass chronometer off the desk and hurled it directly into Evelyn’s face.
