Chapter 6 - Pier Fourteen

The freezing canal water hit Maya like an iron door, knocking the breath from her lungs and pulling her down into the swirling murk. The current in the lower spillway was savage, fueled by the autumn rains, dragging them through concrete culverts lined with rusted rebar and century-old brick. Maya fought the panic, keeping her left hand clutched tightly around the Montblanc pen tucked inside her waistband, while her right arm stroked against the suction.

A heavy hand clamped around her bicep. Julian surfaced beside her, coughing water, his dark hair plastered across his forehead. He kicked with powerful, practiced strokes, dragging them both out of the main culvert jet and into the quiet backwaters of Pier Fourteen.

They hauled themselves onto a rotting wooden slipway beneath the shadow of a rusted container crane. Maya collapsed onto the cold timber, vomiting brackish river water, shivering violently as the autumn wind sliced through her soaked clothes. Julian dropped beside her, tearing off his sodden dress shirt, leaving his heavily tattooed torso exposed to the damp harbor air. The maritime compass on his ribs rose and fell with ragged breaths.

""You're freezing,"" he muttered, tossing the shirt aside and kneeling over her. He checked her pulse at the throat, his thumb brushing against the crescent birthmark. His touch was clinical, but his hands were trembling—not from the cold, but from the sudden, terrifying reality that his entire world had been constructed on an orchestrated lie.

""The pen,"" Maya choked out, shivering. ""Did it... did it stay?""

Julian reached down, carefully pulling the black lacquer instrument from her waistband. He held it up against the distant sodium lights of the harbor. The gold trim was intact; the barrel had not cracked.

""Why tonight?"" Julian asked, his voice rough. ""Why walk into the middle of the Cross merger? I had thirty percent of the board secured. I could have fought her.""

""You had eighteen percent,"" Maya corrected him, sitting up and hugging her knees to her chest. ""Evelyn bought your chief financial officer last Tuesday. By midnight tonight, the holding company would have been liquidated, the assets transferred to an offshore dummy corporation in Panama, and you would have been named sole guarantor of sixty million dollars in defaulted maritime bonds.""

Julian’s face went completely still. ""Marcus sold me out?""

May you like

""Marcus was Evelyn's cousin,"" Maya said. ""Arthur knew what they were doing before he passed. That's why he gave me the pen. That's why he made me wait until the moment she felt completely victorious.""

Before Julian could answer, the headlights of an unmarked black SUV cut through the harbor fog, sweeping across the rotting slipway and pinning them both in a harsh, blinding glare.
