Chapter 4 - Ghost in the Ledger

The darkness inside the elevator shaft was absolute, thick with the smell of machine oil and wet masonry. Julian did not move. In the close confines of the steel cage, Maya could hear his slow, measured breathing—the discipline of a man who had spent his youth in boxing rings and freight yards before ascending to the boardroom.
""You have five seconds before I take that pen from you and test your hypothesis on this wall,"" Julian said, his voice dangerously low.
""Try it,"" Maya replied, her tone devoid of fear. ""And you’ll destroy the microdot embedded in the nib. Arthur didn't just leave you a signature, Julian. He left the digital decryption keys for the offshore holding accounts you’ve been bleeding for twenty-four months.""
A match struck. The sudden sulfur flare carved Julian’s sharp facial features out of the blackness—the hard line of his jaw, the thick scar through his left eyebrow, the deep amber of his irises reflecting the flame. He held a silver lighter, his eyes scanning Maya’s face with ruthless scrutiny.
""You look like her,"" he whispered, the match flame wavering in his steady fingers. ""The eyes. Elena had those same hazel eyes. But Elena had a congenital heart murmur. Arthur watched her flatline in St. Jude’s.""
""Arthur watched a body double provided by Evelyn Cross’s father,"" Maya said, her voice steady. ""They needed the trust capital released immediately under the minority inheritance clause. A living daughter with a forty percent stake blocked the acquisition of the harbor terminals. So Evelyn's family manufactured a death certificate, bought off three county registrars, and Arthur paid half a million dollars to send a six-year-old girl across the border under the name Maya Lin.""
Julian’s lighter burned down to his thumb, but he didn't drop it until the flame scorched his skin. Darkness rushed back in, but this time, the tension was different. It was no longer the anger of an ambushed billionaire; it was the suffocating weight of twenty years of engineered deception.
Above them, metal boots clanged against the top of the elevator cab. Hauer and his men were on the roof. The sound of an emergency hydraulic release ratchet began to turn, metal groaning against metal.
""The emergency hatch opens into the drainage conduit for the old city canal,"" Maya whispered in the dark, her hand finding Julian’s forearm. His muscle felt like stone under the cotton shirt. ""We have about thirty seconds before they drop a flashbang through the roof.""
Julian reached up into the ceiling framework, his fingers catching the steel rim of the maintenance panel. ""If you're lying to me, Maya, I’ll drop you into the canal myself.""
May you like
""If I were lying, brother,"" Maya whispered back, ""I wouldn't have come back to save your company from Evelyn's buyout.""
The roof hatch ripped open with a screech of shearing bolts, and the blinding white beam of a high-lumen tactical flashlight pierced down directly onto them.
