Chapter 11 - The Uncle at the Gate

The rain hammered against the Gulfstream's aluminum fuselage like a drumroll before an execution. Inside the cabin, Clara silently took Lily from the seat, retreating to the reinforced rear stateroom and locking the heavy titanium bulkhead behind her without needing Kenneth to say a word. She knew the protocol.

Kenneth buttoned his navy suit, smoothed his tie, and pressed the release lever on the cabin door.

The heavy airstair descended with a mechanical hiss, unfolding into the wet, cold air. Kenneth stepped out onto the top platform, looking down at the small army encircling his jet. Water dripped from the brim of his lapels, but his gaze never wavered from the man with the silver-headed cane standing at the bottom of the steps.

""Kenneth,"" Raymond spoke, his voice deep, cultured, and utterly devoid of the tremor one would expect from a supposed stroke victim. ""You always had your grandfather's stubborn jaw. And his complete lack of survival instinct.""

""Raymond,"" Kenneth replied, descending the wet metal steps with measured, deliberate slowness until he stood four paces away, eye-to-eye with his mother’s brother. ""I see the climate in Monaco cured your paralysis.""

Raymond let out a quiet, aristocratic chuckle, leaning slightly on his cane. ""Monaco is terribly boring, my boy. But it provided an exquisite vantage point to watch Arthur run the family business into the ground. I must thank you, truly. You did the dirty work of stripping Arthur of his legal protections. You saved me months of tedious litigation.""

""You used Arthur as a scapegoat, Julian as a degenerate front, and tried to murder my grandmother in Geneva,"" Kenneth stated, his voice carrying clearly over the thrum of the jet engines. ""You broke every rule of the family charter.""

""The charter was written by weak men who believed in courts and ledgers,"" Raymond said dismissively, taking a step forward. The guards around him raised their barrels slightly, their wet leather gloves squeaking against the composite stocks. ""In the real world, power belongs to whoever controls the choke points. You hold Vanguard's digital keys, yes. But I hold the physical infrastructure. I control the port of Rotterdam, the dry docks in Singapore, and every customs official between here and Gibraltar.""

Raymond reached into his overcoat and produced an antique fountain pen, holding it out toward Kenneth.

""Inside that plane is your lovely wife and that sweet little girl who draws with purple crayons,"" Raymond said, his tone softening into a terrifying, grandfatherly warmth. ""Sign over the root administrator rights of Vanguard to my foundation. In return, I will let the three of you take off. You can live in quiet luxury on an island in the South Pacific. You will never have to see another Miller again.""

Kenneth looked down at the pen, then up into his uncle’s cold, lifeless eyes.

""And if I refuse?""

Raymond’s smile vanished, leaving a face carved of grey granite. ""Then this plane experiences a catastrophic mechanical failure three miles off the coast. And your daughter never gets to finish that drawing.""
