Chapter 14 - The Hunter's True Face

In the pitch-black cockpit, the avionics displays glowed with ominous amber warnings as the airfield's auxiliary power was severed. The pilot frantically flipped switches on the overhead console. ""Primary ground radar is dead, Mr. Miller! They’ve jammed the transponder array! We have no clearance and no lights!""
""Lock down the cabin,"" Kenneth ordered, his voice cold, steady, and razor-sharp. ""Cut all exterior strobes. Clara, take Lily back to the armored compartment and put on the emergency headsets.""
Clara didn't hesitate. She scooped up the sleepy child, whispering soothing words, and sealed the blast-door of the rear stateroom.
Kenneth stood in the darkness of the main cabin, looking through the oval window. Outside, the rain continued to pour, illuminated only by the sweeping white beams of tactical flashlights mounted on assault rifles. Vance’s federal strike team was moving with lethal efficiency, systematically surrounding the aircraft and cutting off any possible escape route.
Kenneth’s satellite transponder buzzed against his wrist. A private audio channel opened, connecting directly to Vance’s frequency.
""You should have stayed in the shadows, Kenneth,"" Vance’s voice came through, smooth, professional, and entirely stripped of the deferential warmth he had shown in the ballroom. ""You were doing so well as the invisible chairman. But you brought family drama into high finance, and you dragged our names into the mud.""
""You played me from the start,"" Kenneth said, keeping his eyes locked on Vance’s distant silhouette near the hangar. ""You knew Arthur had reached his limit. You used my audit to bring down Miller Holdings so you could seize the ledger Margot was guarding in Geneva.""
""Arthur was a bumbling idiot who couldn't balance a checkbook without stealing from widows,"" Vance replied with a cold sneer. ""He was going to get us all audited by international tribunals. He had to be removed. And Raymond was far too ambitious for his own good. You did the Commonwealth a great service tonight, Kenneth. You gathered all the diseased branches of your family tree in one room so we could prune them.""
""And me?"" Kenneth asked, his fingers resting against the pocket that held his daughter’s drawing. ""Am I a diseased branch, Vance?""
""You're a brilliant young man, Kenneth. But you know too much. And worse, Margot has the iron box."" Vance took a slow step forward through the rain. ""Hand over the coordinates to the Zurich transfer, surrender the physical box, and I will let the Gulfstream fly. Clara and Lily will have a very comfortable life in exile.""
Kenneth let out a faint, humorless laugh. ""You make the same mistake Arthur made. You think power comes from the title you hold or the uniform your men wear.""
""My men have thirty-millimeter armor-piercing rounds trained on your fuselage, Kenneth,"" Vance said coldly. ""In ten seconds, I give the order to breach. There are no cameras out here. The morning news will report an accidental fuel explosion on an unauthorized flight.""
Kenneth tapped his ear-piece. ""Victor. Are you on station?""
A quiet, mechanical click replied through the secondary encrypted line: ""In position, Chairman. Three clicks south, riding the tree line.""
Kenneth looked out the window, his eyes narrowing. ""Vance, you forgot one thing about my grandfather's maritime empire.""
May you like
Vance’s voice grew impatient. ""What is that, Kenneth?""
""He never trusted the government to protect his docks.""
