Chapter 9 - The Extraction

The cellar ceiling blew inward with a controlled, surgical concussive charge. Stone fragments and heavy dust rained down, instantly illuminated by sweeping green laser lines piercing through the gloom.
""Down! On the floor!""
The commands were delivered not in shouts, but in sharp, clipped, professional snaps. Four operators clad in black carbon-fiber armor descended through the breach via fast-ropes, their weapons firing suppressed bursts with terrifying precision. The mercenary at the door collapsed instantly, three rounds to the center mass before his rifle could even clear his hip.
The lead kidnapper scrambled backward, his mask torn off to reveal a terrified man in his late thirties with sweat dripping down his temples. He lunged toward Margot, raising his pistol to use her as a shield.
He never reached her.
A single round took him through the shoulder, spinning him violently into the stone wall. An operator stepped over the fallen concrete, placed a heavy combat boot squarely on the man’s neck, and pinned him to the floor with three hundred pounds of tactical gear and momentum.
""Package secure,"" the team lead barked into his throat-mic, holstering his sidearm and immediately kneeling beside Margot’s chair. With a flick of a ceramic blade, he sliced the heavy zip-ties from her wrists. ""Madame Miller. Your grandson sends his regards.""
Margot rubbed her bruised wrists, her breathing steady, not a single hair out of place despite the dust settling over her shoulders. ""It took him twelve minutes longer than I expected. Tell him his logistics department needs an audit.""
The operator couldn't suppress a small smirk behind his ballistic visor. ""Understood, ma'am. Let’s get you airborne.""
Back in the command trailer behind the Imperial Hotel, Kenneth watched the green night-vision feed as the operators safely escorted Margot into the waiting helicopter. The tension that had held his spine like a steel rod finally relaxed, a long, ragged exhale leaving his lungs.
Beside him, Arthur sank onto a steel bench, his head buried in his trembling hands. ""It’s over... it’s all over. They’ll kill Julian now. The syndicate... they don't forgive failure.""
Kenneth turned slowly toward his father. ""Who is behind them, Arthur? Who gave them the location of the Geneva property?""
Arthur looked up, tears finally cutting tracks through the grime and sweat on his face. ""You don't understand who you're dealing with, Kenneth. You think you're powerful with your private trust and your high-tech toys? Vanguard is nothing to them. They own the central clearing banks. They own the judges. They own the people who write the maritime trade laws.""
""I asked for a name,"" Kenneth said, stepping closer, his shadow engulfing the broken patriarch.
Arthur swallowed hard, his throat clicking dryly. ""The Sovereign Accord. And the man who holds the chair... is your mother’s brother. Uncle Raymond.""
Kenneth’s eyes narrowed into slits of ice. ""Raymond? Raymond has been in an assisted living facility in Monaco for eight years.""
Arthur let out a pathetic, shuddering laugh. ""Monaco? That was the cover story, Kenneth. Raymond isn't sick. He’s the one who bought your debt notes first. He’s the one who wanted the Miller name erased.""
Kenneth stared at Arthur for three silent seconds. Then he turned to DA Vance, who was standing quietly near the trailer door, listening to every word.
""Vance,"" Kenneth said softly.
""Yes, Kenneth?""
""Book Arthur into the county holding facility. General population. No bail, no protective custody, no special privileges.""
May you like
Arthur scrambled to his feet in panic. ""Kenneth! No! In general population, Raymond’s people will murder me in my sleep!""
Kenneth didn't even look back as he walked toward the door. ""Then I suggest you stay awake.""
