Chapter 13 - The Secret in the Vault

Kenneth climbed back into the Gulfstream cabin, the heavy door sealing shut behind him, cutting off the torrential roar of the rain and the distant sirens echoing across the tarmac. The interior was quiet, save for the hum of the climate control. Clara emerged from the rear stateroom, her eyes questioning, holding her breath until she saw Kenneth’s nod.
""It’s over on this side,"" Kenneth said, pulling her into a brief, fierce embrace. ""Raymond is in custody. Vance has secured the airport.""
He sat down at the conference table, placing his tablet flat on the polished mahogany. The video link with Margot remained active, the elderly matriarch seated before a massive steel table in the subterranean vault of the Zurich affiliate bank.
""Margot,"" Kenneth said, leaning forward. ""What did you find in the Geneva inventory? Arthur claimed it was three billion in bearer bonds. Raymond thought it was the maritime routing keys.""
On the screen, Margot slowly shook her head. Her face, usually so composed and impenetrable, looked pale and haunted in the harsh fluorescent lighting of the Swiss vault.
""Arthur and Raymond were fools, Kenneth. They spent thirty years chasing ghosts, believing your grandfather left behind an empire of paper and gold."" Margot reached off-camera and lifted a heavy, tarnished iron strongbox onto the table. It had no digital keypad, no modern biometric scanner—only three heavy mechanical tumblers stamped with the crest of the pre-war Miller shipping line.
""Your grandfather didn't steal that money, Kenneth,"" Margot whispered, her hand trembling as she touched the cold iron. ""He didn't hide bearer bonds. He hid an extortion ledger.""
Kenneth’s brow furrowed. ""An extortion ledger?""
""Fifty years ago, before the modern banking acts, the Sovereign Accord was founded by seven founding families. The Millers, the Vances, the Hendersons... and the current sitting Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.""
Kenneth felt a chill run down his spine. ""Vance? DA Vance's family?""
""Why do you think Marcus Vance was so eager to help you tear down Arthur tonight, Kenneth?"" Margot’s voice cracked with urgency. ""Arthur was careless. He was going to expose the network. Vance didn't come to that ballroom to serve justice. He came to use you to eliminate Arthur and Raymond before they could talk!""
Kenneth’s heart slammed against his ribs. He leaped to his feet, lunging toward the cockpit. ""Pilot! Do not taxi! Abort the takeoff sequence!""
Through the cockpit glass, Kenneth looked out toward the tarmac.
The armored SUVs holding Arthur and Raymond had not left the gate. Instead, two black tactical vans had cut them off near the hangar exit. Dozens of heavily armed men—not in Apex uniforms, but wearing unmarked tactical windbreakers with federal seals—were disarming Kenneth’s contractors.
Standing near the hangar, sheltered from the rain under a black umbrella, was District Attorney Marcus Vance.

Vance was not looking at the prisoners. He was looking directly up at the cockpit of the Gulfstream, raising a small, military-grade radio to his lips.
Suddenly, all the lights on the runway died at once, plunging the airfield into total, suffocating darkness.
