Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The air seemed to leave the banquet hall all at once. Arthur’s knees buckled slightly, his hand slipping against the polished mahogany until Eleanor caught his elbow, her polished facade completely crumbling into terrified panic.

""The indemnity clause..."" Arthur choked out, the words barely audible. ""That was... that was an internal agreement between the holding partners. It was sealed!""

""It was sealed until Vanguard acquired the outstanding bank notes,"" DA Vance intervened, snapping his fingers toward his associate. The junior attorney produced a thick manila folder and dropped it squarely onto Arthur’s untouched plate, splattering gravy across the pristine white linen. ""The moment Vanguard called the debt due at five o'clock today, all corporate protections were voided. You are personally liable for every cent, Arthur.""

A woman at table four screamed in dismay as her husband, a major investor in Miller Holdings, violently pulled off his tie. ""You lied to us, Arthur! You said the firm was solvent! My entire portfolio is collateralized against your stock!""

""Sit down, Harold!"" Eleanor shrieked, her voice turning high and ragged. ""It’s a mistake! Kenneth is playing a sick prank! He’s bitter because we cut his allowance! He's always been jealous of Julian!""

Kenneth didn't even look at his mother. Instead, he crouched down beside Lily, whose eyes were wide as she watched the chaos unfold. Clara wrapped her arms around their daughter's shoulders, her face calm and serene; she had known who Kenneth truly was from the moment they met in that small, rainy coffee shop seven years ago. She had loved the man who built an empire in the shadows, not the broken heir they tried to discard.

""Daddy,"" Lily whispered, tugging his lapel. ""Can we go home now? The people here are very loud.""

""In just a moment, sweetheart,"" Kenneth said, kissing her forehead. He stood back up, adjusting the cuffs of his navy jacket. ""District Attorney Vance, I believe you have the arrest warrants for Julian Miller and Arthur Miller for grand larceny, securities fraud, and tax evasion?""

""We do,"" Vance replied, stepping aside to reveal four uniformed officers entering through the service doors.

Julian turned to bolt toward the kitchen, but two officers tackled him into a stack of champagne flutes, sending hundreds of crystal glasses crashing to the floor in a thunderous explosion of shattering glass and foam. Julian wailed like a child, face pressed into the wet carpet.

Arthur looked at Kenneth, his arrogance finally replaced by sheer, suffocating dread. ""Kenneth... please. We are your blood. You can't let them take me in handcuffs. Not in front of everyone.""

Kenneth looked down at the old man who had discarded him without a second thought. ""You told me ten minutes ago that my family belonged by the trash.""

Kenneth turned his back. ""Officer, take out the trash.""

As the handcuffs clicked around Arthur’s wrists, Eleanor threw herself at Kenneth’s feet, weeping uncontrollably. But before Kenneth could take a single step toward the exit, his phone vibrated against his ribs with an emergency alert that bypassed all silent settings.

Kenneth pulled the phone out. The screen displayed a single, encrypted message from his overseas security team:
