Chapter 12 - The Choke Point

Kenneth did not look at the pen. He looked past Raymond, toward the perimeter fence of the airfield where the rain was coming down in thick, blinding sheets.

""You speak of choke points, Raymond,"" Kenneth said quietly, his voice dangerously even. ""You think holding three ports and bribing a handful of customs inspectors makes you an emperor.""

Raymond frowned, the edge of his silver cane sinking slightly into the soft asphalt. ""It makes me the man holding the gun to your head, Kenneth. Do not confuse your luck in Geneva with true leverage. My men outnumber your security ten to one on this runway.""

""Your men on this runway are contractors hired through Apex Maritime Security,"" Kenneth noted casually, tapping his watch screen twice. ""Apex Maritime is a subsidiary of Trident Global Solutions. Trident Global defaulted on their mezzanine financing seventy-two hours ago.""

Raymond’s eyes narrowed, a tiny flicker of doubt finally piercing his arrogant composure. ""What are you talking about?""

""I’m talking about the fact that you haven't checked your corporate wire confirmations since nine o'clock tonight,"" Kenneth continued, taking a slow step toward his uncle. ""You thought you were buying Vanguard's debt. But while you were watching Arthur's pathetic dinner party, Vanguard was executing a hostile takeover of Apex's parent company.""

Kenneth stopped two feet from Raymond. He raised his voice, not in anger, but in clear, military authority.

""Code Black. Commander Vance, confirm directive.""

Around the tarmac, the thirty armed men in dark trench coats did not raise their weapons toward Kenneth. Instead, with mechanical synchronization, every single operative pivoted on their heels, snapping the barrels of their assault rifles directly at Raymond and his personal bodyguards.

The aide holding Raymond's umbrella froze, his face draining of all color.

Raymond slowly looked around the circle, his grip on the cane tightening until his knuckles turned ghostly white. ""What is this? What have you done?!""

""I bought the company that signs their paychecks thirty minutes ago, Uncle,"" Kenneth whispered. ""Their loyalty never belonged to you. It belonged to their pension funds. The very funds you tried to empty to build your shadow fleet.""

The lead operative stepped forward, kicking the silver-headed cane out from beneath Raymond's hand.

The cane clattered against the wet asphalt, revealing a concealed eight-inch blade inside the hollow shaft as it cracked open on the ground. Raymond stumbled, falling to his knees in the puddles, his bespoke suit soaking through with freezing water and grime.

""You insolent dog!"" Raymond snarled, his mask of aristocratic refinement completely shattering into pure, foaming rage. ""You think this ends here? The Sovereign Accord will hunt you to the ends of the earth! You can't kill me! I know where the rest of the offshore assets are buried!""

Kenneth looked down at the man kneeling in the mud—the true architect of his family’s misery, the man who had ruined his childhood, banished his mother, and threatened his daughter.

""I don't need to kill you, Raymond,"" Kenneth said, turning back toward the airstair. ""And I don't need your assets.""

Kenneth paused on the second step, looking back over his shoulder.

""Take him to the same holding cell as Arthur. Let the two brothers catch up on the last thirty years.""

As the operatives dragged Raymond kicking and screaming into the back of an armored SUV, Kenneth’s phone chimed with a priority video link from Zurich. Margot’s face appeared on the screen, sitting in the secure clinic, looking completely unharmed.

""Kenneth,"" she said, her voice trembling slightly for the very first time. ""You need to look at the vault inventory from Geneva. Now.""
