Chapter 3 - An Unspoken Bond

The woman’s name was Elena. She wore a faded denim jacket, no jewelry except a plain silver wedding band, and dark shadows beneath her eyes that mirrored Julian’s own. She reached down to pull Maya back, expecting the cold dismissal that usually accompanied first-class encounters.

"Please," Julian intervened, speaking before he even realized it. "Don't apologize. She... she actually stopped him from crying. I haven't been able to do that in six hours."

Elena looked down at Leo, who had turned his head inward, resting his damp cheek directly over Julian's collarbone. "Colic?" she asked gently.

"Exhaustion," Julian admitted. "And fear. Mostly mine."

"Fatherhood doesn't come with an operating manual," Elena said softly, her defensive posture melting into shared maternal empathy. "Especially when you're carrying the weight alone."

Julian's eyes stung. He had avoided telling his colleagues that his wife, Clara, had passed away during childbirth three months ago. In his corporate world, vulnerability was blood in the water. But here, suspended between continents in the middle of the night, pretenses dissolved.

"Sit down, please," Julian offered, gesturing toward the empty companion seat across his pod. "Just for a few minutes. If the flight crew says anything, I'll take full responsibility."

Elena hesitated, checking the aisle, then sat down with a quiet sigh of pure physical relief. Maya remained standing beside Julian, her hand never leaving Leo’s tiny foot.
