Chapter 13 - The Bridge Across the Past

Two hours later, the steps of the courthouse were bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon. Microphones were thrust into the air, cameras flashed, and journalists called out questions, but Clara, Julian, and Sarah Lin walked past them in silence, their eyes fixed on a quiet bench beneath an ancient elm tree.
Officer Miller stood waiting by his patrol car, his hands resting comfortably in the pockets of his jacket. When Clara approached, she did not offer a handshake. She stepped forward and embraced the veteran officer, burying her face against his canvas coat.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice thick with tears. "You didn't even know me. You could have lost everything."
Miller smiled gently, patting her shoulder. "I knew what was right, Clara. In this uniform, that's the only thing that actually belongs to you. You lose that, and the rest doesn't matter."

Julian stepped up, extending his hand to Miller with genuine reverence. "Officer Miller, I don't know how I'll ever repay the debt our family owes you."
"You don't owe me a thing, son," Miller replied, shaking Julian’s hand firmly. "Just raise that boy to know that real strength doesn't come from pushing people down. It comes from standing between the bully and the person who can't fight back."
