The local newspaper ran an investigative series exposing the network of cronyism that had allowed Elena Sterling to control local appointments for decades. The compromised magistrate resigned under criminal indictment, Chief Callahan announced an early retirement, and the state judicial commission permanently stripped Elena of her bench and law license.
Elena was moved to a state correctional facility awaiting trial on felony conspiracy charges. Stripped of her mink coats, her designer wardrobe, and her fawning attendants, she became an inmate wearing standard-issue orange cotton, eating off plastic trays in a cafeteria of equals.
Meanwhile, Julian legally disclaimed his right to the contested family trust, directing that its entire capital balance be converted into a non-profit foundation providing legal representation and medical assistance to low-income mothers across the state.
