Chapter 4 - The Offer in the Shadows

At dawn, the hospital’s glass entrance doors parted to admit an attorney wearing an Italian suit and carrying an embossed leather briefcase. Arthur Vance—no relation to Clara, but rather the senior partner of Sterling, Vance & Croft—walked with the relaxed certainty of a man who solved problems with wire transfers.

He bypassed the front desk and moved directly toward Room 412, but stopped when Officer Miller rose to block the doorway.

"Counselor," Miller said, his arms crossed over his chest. "Visiting hours don't start until eight."

"I am here on behalf of the Sterling Family Trust, Officer Miller," Arthur said, extending an envelope bearing a thick wax seal. "And I believe your shift ended at six. We are here to resolve a private family dispute quietly. Miss Vance has no legal representation, and we are offering an exceedingly generous settlement."

Inside the envelope lay a cashier's check for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars, accompanied by a comprehensive surrender of parental rights and an immediate non-disclosure agreement.

Clara’s voice came from the darkness of the room, hoarse but steady. "Tell him to leave."

Arthur stepped around Miller’s shoulder, offering an empathetic, polished smile. "Clara, please be rational. This trust will provide Noah with private academies, trust funds, and medical care you couldn't afford in three lifetimes. What can you offer him? A life of eviction notices and state assistance? Love does not pay utility bills."

Clara sat up, cradling Noah in her left arm. With her right hand, she reached out, took the envelope from Arthur’s fingers, and without breaking eye contact, tore it directly down the center.

"I can offer him a home where people aren't purchased like furniture," Clara said, her voice trembling with conviction. "Get out of my room."
