Chapter 9 - The Web Unravels

Elena’s legal team struck first, painting Clara as an impoverished, unstable young woman incapable of providing shelter, medical insurance, or emotional security for a newborn. They produced forged character affidavits and emphasized Clara’s lack of immediate family support.

"Your Honor," Arthur Vance argued smoothly, "we are merely asking for temporary custody to be vested in the paternal grandmother, where the infant will receive the highest standard of pediatric care, pending a comprehensive home evaluation."

Judge Thornton adjusted his glasses and looked down at Sarah Lin. "Response from the defense?"

Sarah stood up, steady and composed. "Your Honor, this petition is built entirely on perjury, intimidation, and an assault committed inside a medical facility."

Sarah did not merely argue; she presented the evidence Officer Miller had spent the night verifying. She entered the hospital security footage into the record, showing Elena Sterling physically striking Clara and attempting to force her way out of the room before police arrived.

A murmur swept through the courtroom. Elena’s lead counsel immediately objected, but Judge Thornton raised a hand.

"The objection is overruled," Thornton said, his voice cold. "The court will view the security footage."

As the grainy video played on the monitors—showing Elena's violent lunge and the terrified young mother shielding her child—Elena’s immaculate facade began to show its first microscopic cracks. Her lips tightened into a pale, bloodless line.
