Chapter 15 - A Dawn That Belongs to Them

Six months later, a gentle autumn breeze rustled the crimson leaves of the sugar maples outside a small farmhouse on the outskirts of the county. The porch was painted white, with a wooden swing suspended by iron chains that creaked softly in the wind.
Clara sat on the swing, watching six-month-old Noah crawl across a woolen blanket laid out on the lawn. Julian sat beside him, laughing as the baby tried to grasp a drifting maple leaf. Noah let out a bright, bubbling laugh that seemed to fill the entire valley with music.
A pickup truck pulled up the gravel driveway. Officer Mark Miller stepped out, holding a wrapped gift box and a bag of fresh apples from his orchard. He looked refreshed, having accepted an appointment as the newly reformed county’s chief of police.
"Thought the little guy might like some cider apples," Miller said, walking up the grass with an easy smile.
Clara stood up, walking down the porch steps to greet him. The scar on her lip had faded to a tiny, silver line—a quiet testament to a battle fought and won.

"Come sit with us, Mark," Clara said, taking the apples and gesturing toward the porch.

The long night was finally over, and the dawn that followed belonged entirely to them.
