Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Courtroom 3

The following morning, the third-floor corridor of the county courthouse was packed with reporters, local bailiffs, and curious onlookers. Whispers rippled through the gallery as Judge Elena Sterling arrived, accompanied by three senior defense attorneys. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, her expression serene, regal, and utterly untouchable.
Clara Vance arrived fifteen minutes later. She wore a modest navy dress borrowed from a shelter coordinator, her dark hair combed neatly behind her ears. Though she leaned slightly on Sarah Lin’s arm from the physical strain of childbirth, her chin was raised. In her purse, she carried a single Polaroid: Julian smiling beside her on a park bench, his hand resting gently over her swollen stomach.
As they passed through the metal detectors, Elena paused, allowing her gaze to drift over Clara with cold dismissal.
"You should have taken the check, Clara," Elena whispered as they brushed past in the doorway. "A pauper does not defeat an empire."
Clara stopped and looked directly into the older woman's eyes. "A mother isn't an empire, Elena. She doesn't conquer. She endures."

The bailiff called the court to order. Presiding was Judge Harold Thornton—a jurist known for his rigid adherence to statutory procedure, a man whose career had developed parallel to Elena's without ever becoming subservient to it.
"Matter of Sterling versus Vance," the clerk announced. "Petition for emergency interim custody."
