Chapter 1 - The Silence of the Ward

The heavy air inside Room 408 smelled faintly of antiseptic and unexpressed fear.
Dr. Richard Sterling held the newborn infant against his chest. His gloved hands, usually steady across forty years of emergency medicine, trembled ever so slightly beneath the weight of the pale yellow blanket. He looked down at Clara Vance—a woman whose eyes held the shattered glitter of someone who had survived a storm only to find herself trapped in a hurricane.
"Is my baby okay?" Clara’s voice was barely a rasp, dry from hours of labored breathing. The faint crimson line across her brow—a souvenir from the highway collision three hours prior—throbbing with every pulse.
Richard took a slow, deliberate breath. His eyes flicked from the infant’s serene face to the glowing monitors flickering behind Clara’s bed. "This... shouldn't be possible."
"What's wrong?" Clara pushed herself up against the thin hospital pillow, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the side rail.
"The blood typing, Clara," Richard whispered, his voice restrained yet heavy with an unexplainable weight. "The infant's rare marker... it’s an exact genetic match to a donor profile archived thirty years ago. A profile that belonged to someone declared dead." He paused, his gaze sharpening. "Who is his father?"

"Julian Vance," she breathed.
The wooden door swung open before the final syllable fully settled. Standing in the frame, bathed in the harsh fluorescent glow of the hallway, was Julian Vance himself. Beside him stood his mother, Eleanor Vance, her pearls gleaming against a dark teal dress, her jaw set in rigid disbelief. Julian looked at Clara, then at the bundle in the doctor’s arms, his face draining of color as the past crashed violently into the present.
