Chapter 6 - Rebuilding from Ruins

Leaving the empire behind brought an unfamiliar lightness to Julian's shoulders, but the harsh reality of life outside the corporate sanctuary set in quickly. Clara was discharged from the hospital, taking refuge in a modest, sunlit cottage on the outskirts of the town—a place her grandmother had left her.

Julian arrived late one afternoon, carrying a small suitcase and a box of supplies. The grandeur of the Vance estate was replaced by the simple rustle of oak trees and the smell of fresh earth.

Clara stood on the porch, holding Leo wrapped in his yellow blanket. "You gave up everything, Julian."

"No," Julian said, walking up the steps until he stood directly in front of her. "I gave up the noise. I kept what actually matters."

They sat together on the porch swing as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and violet. For the first time in two years, they didn't speak of past mistakes or future fears. They simply listened to the quiet rhythm of their baby breathing.
