Chapter 13 - Mercy in the RubbleTwo weeks after the verdict, Julian came to the public park near 4th Street. He looked older, the sharpness in his tailored posture replaced by a hesitant, wounded posture. He sat on a bench and watched Clara and three-year-old Lily planting wildflowers in the community garden.

Lily ran past him, laughing as she chased a bumblebee, clutching a small plastic watering can. Julian watched her with a heavy, hollow ache in his chest—a sudden, crushing awareness of the irreplaceable life he had cast aside for illusions of pride.

Clara noticed him. She wiped the soil from her gardening gloves, knelt to whisper something to Marcus who was watching Lily, and walked over to the bench.

Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "I lost everything, Clara."

"You didn't lose everything, Julian," Clara said quietly, sitting at the far end of the bench. "You lost what you used to hide behind. You finally have a chance to discover who you actually are."

"Do you hate me?" he asked, his voice trembling.

"No," Clara replied, looking across the green lawn where children played. "Hating you would mean carrying you with me. I put that weight down the day I walked out of that hospital room. I pity you, Julian. But I also hope you find a way to become a man your son Tristan won't have to heal from."

Julian bowed his head, tears finally slipping down his face—the first honest emotion he had shown in years.
