Chapter 3 - Haven on 4th StreetThe refuge Clara found was an old three-story brick building nestled between an auto repair garage and a bakery on 4th Street: St. Jude’s Family Center, managed by Marcus Bennett, a retired civil rights attorney whose silver beard and tired, observant eyes gave him the aura of an old sentinel.

"We don’t offer luxuries here, Clara," Marcus said the following morning as steam rose from two chipped ceramic mugs of black tea. "We offer clean sheets, lockable doors, and time to breathe. What you build out of that time is up to you."
"Time is all I need, Mr. Bennett," Clara said, rocking Lily gently in a donated bassinet. "I have a degree in urban planning and four years of uncredited archival management. I know how systems work, and I know how the Sterlings hide their assets."
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a spark of interest igniting in his worn eyes. "The Sterlings are not people you challenge lightly. They own city magistrates and corporate boards."

"I am not looking for revenge," Clara replied with quiet intensity. "I am looking for justice. Julian thinks he discarded a victim. He forgot that I was the one who drafted the municipal land-trust agreements that built his company’s current expansion."
Marcus smiled for the first time—a slow, weathered grin. "Then finish your tea, Clara. We have work to do."
