Evelyn was not content with backroom obscurity; she demanded board representation and social prestige that Beatrice Sterling refused to surrender. The Sterling mansion had become a cold battlefield of passive-aggressive snubs and bitter recriminations.
"You should have made Clara sign that non-disclosure agreement," Beatrice hissed at Julian one evening in the study, throwing a legal subpoena onto his mahogany desk. "A regional housing advocacy group has filed a formal injunction against the North Harbor parcel. The court has accepted their brief."
Julian stared at the filing. The prose was surgical, devastatingly precise, and unmistakably Clara’s.
