Chapter 5 - A Seed in Stony SoilOne year after the cold afternoon in the hospital, Lily took her first steps on the worn hardwood floors of Clara’s modest, rented studio apartment above the bakery. The room was sparse—a secondhand crib, a folding desk, and shelves stacked with legal codices and zoning maps—yet it smelled of baked cinnamon and fresh laundry. It was a home built entirely of honesty.

Clara spent her evenings typing under the warm light of a single desk lamp. She began drafting comprehensive, whistleblower documentation exposing the structural violations in Sterling Development’s waterfront project. She did not seek sensationalism; she documented facts, contracts, dates, and environmental test reports she had cataloged years ago before being locked out of the estate.
Lily toddled over, pressing a chubby hand against Clara’s knee, babbling joyful nonsense. Clara scooped her up, burying her nose into the girl’s soft curls.
"We are building something solid, Lily," Clara murmured. "Something no one can tear down with a pen."
