Chapter 2 - Echoes of the Shattered ConvoyBy four in the morning, the estate’s study smelled of damp wool, gun oil, and black coffee. Noah leaned over the mahogany map table, tossing down a collection of burnt flare casings and a recovered radio transponder.

"The ambush was an inside play," Noah said, his fingers tracing the contour lines of the Blackwood Pass. "The secondary route was known only to three precinct commanders and your brother, Marcus."
Julian stood before the cold hearth, tumbler of untouched scotch in hand. Hearing his brother’s name did not surprise him, but it pierced him with a dull, familiar ache. "Leo," she whispered, her voice cracking. "Julian... where is my boy?"
Julian stepped forward immediately, taking her trembling hands into his warm palms. "Elena, you need to lie down. The fever—"

"Do not tell me to rest while my son is in the dark!" Her fury flared, desperate and raw, before she collapsed against Julian’s chest, weeping quietly into his coat. "They put a burlap sack over his head, Julian. He couldn't see... he was reaching for me, and my hands were trapped beneath the crushed door frame. I could hear his boots kicking the metal."
"I swear to you," Julian murmured, holding her steady, "we will bring him back. Marcus will not keep him."
