"Marcus has three private contractors with him," Julian explained, staring through the wiper blades. "Former border scouts. They aren't mercenaries for hire—they're men Marcus pulled from federal penitentiaries using counterfeit release orders. They owe him their freedom, which makes them fanatical."

A crackle broke over the radio. A static-laden voice spoke: "Julian. You're four minutes out. Leave the cop at the gate. Come in alone with the key, or I put the boy on a train heading south, and you'll spend the next decade looking for unmarked graves."

Elena caught her breath. Julian pressed the talk button on his console. "We're coming. Don't touch the boy, Marcus."
