Chapter 8 - The Crack of IceOutside on the catwalk of the watchtower, Noah Vance lay prone, the cold metal biting through his tactical gear. Beside him on the shelter floor, Elena held baby Thomas close against her chest inside her down parka, whispering soothing lullabies against the infant's ear to keep him silent.

Noah had his eye pressed against the night-vision optic of his rifle. Through the high dirty windows of the rail depot, he had Marcus in his crosshairs.
"I have the shot," Noah whispered into his radio mic. "Julian, confirm. I can drop Marcus now."
Julian didn't touch his earpiece, but his body language shifted imperceptibly. He knew that taking the shot would trigger Marcus's two guards to instantly fire on both him and Leo.
Suddenly, the depot floor groaned. A shift in the blizzard’s weight had caused a massive shelf of ice to slide from the warehouse roof, crashing down upon the metal skylight above. The shatter of heavy industrial glass echoed like a volley of mortar rounds.

"Get the boy!" Marcus roared, startled by the collapse.
Julian didn't hesitate. He drew his sidearm from his coat, diving behind a rusted train bogie as the first guard opened fire. Bullets pinged violently against the cast-iron wheels, sending sparks spraying across the snow-dusted concrete.
