Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of Survival

The silk of the duvet felt like melted silver against Bennett’s fevered skin, cool yet suffocating. Her pulse hammered against her temples in erratic, frantic bursts. In front of her sat Julian Vance—heir to the Vance industrial dynasty, a man whose reputation was built on ruthless calculations and silence colder than marble.

His fingers were still locked around her upper arms, warm and steady. He didn't shake her, nor did he pull her closer than necessary, yet the authority in his grip rooted her to the mattress.

"Poisoned water?" Bennett managed to breathe out, her voice rasping against a parched throat. "You think someone tried to kill me? I'm your archivist, Julian. I catalog old shipping manifests and museum donations. Nobody kills the archivist."

Julian didn't blink. The amber glow of the bedside lamp cast long shadows across his jawline, accentuating the faint trace of stubble. "They don't kill the archivist for what she does," he murmured, his thumb brushing lightly against the fabric of her sleeve before letting go. "They kill her for what she unearths. You collapsed in the private vault three hours ago. The water carafe on your desk contained traces of aconite."

A chill raced down Bennett’s spine, cutting through the heat of her fever. Aconite. Wolfsbane. An old poison, silent and merciless.

"I thought I was just exhausted," she confessed quietly, pulling her knees up to her chest beneath the satin covers. Her lace nightgown was damp with cold sweat. "The documents regarding the 1994 rail expansion... there were missing manifests. Discrepancies in the charitable trust."

Julian rose from the bed, his tall silhouette cutting cleanly through the dim room. He walked to the marble side table, poured fresh water from a sealed glass bottle, and handed it to her. "Drink. My personal physician tested this batch himself."

She looked at the glass, then up at him. "Why did you bring me to your personal quarters? If your board members find out—"

"My board members think you are currently in a secure clinic in Geneva," Julian interrupted, his voice smooth and devoid of doubt. "Out of sight, out of reach. In this house, Bennett, perception is currency, but truth is survival. Sleep. Tomorrow, the game changes."
