Chapter 10 - Unspoken Truths

Autumn bled into winter, dusting Central Park with a thin coat of early frost. With the legal chaos beginning to settle into routine court hearings, Bennett’s temporary stay at Julian’s penthouse came to a natural end. Her modest apartment in Brooklyn had been swept by security and declared entirely safe.

She packed her few belongings into a single canvas suitcase on a quiet Sunday morning.

Julian leaned against the bedroom doorway, watching her fold a wool sweater. The air between them was thick with words neither had the courage to voice.

"You don't have to leave," Julian said quietly, his hands resting deep in his slacks pockets. "There is plenty of room here. And the foundation’s new board could use a permanent oversight director."

Bennett paused, looking down at her packed suitcase. "Julian, if I stay because you offer me a job, I will always be your employee. If I stay because you feel responsible for my safety, I will always be your charge."

He walked toward her slowly, stopping just inches away. The distance between them shrank to nothing, reviving the electric tension from that first night in the dimly lit bedroom.

"And what if I want you to stay," Julian murmured, his voice dropping an octave, rich and raw, "because the penthouse feels like a tomb when you aren't in it?"

Bennett looked up, her breath catching. "Julian..."

"I have lived thirty-four years measuring everything in leverage, contracts, and risk management," he confessed, reaching out to gently tuck a stray strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against the curve of her jaw, warm and tender. "You are the only person who ever looked at me and demanded my soul instead of my money. And I find... I want to give it to you."
