The gala was an intoxicating blur of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and murmuring voices accompanied by a string quartet. The moment Julian entered with Bennett on his arm, the room seemed to pivot on its axis. Whispers rippled across the polished marble floor.

Julian kept Bennett close, his hand resting lightly against the small of her back—a gesture that projected both protection and ownership.

"Julian, my boy!" A booming voice broke through the crowd.

Richard Vance stepped forward, holding a martini glass. He was a silver-haired man in his late fifties, impeccably groomed, with a smile that never quite reached his cold, calculating eyes.

"Uncle Richard," Julian greeted him with cool politeness. "You look well."

Richard’s gaze slid to Bennett, a flash of irritation flickering across his features before settling back into genial charm. "And who is this charming young lady? Don't tell me my workaholic nephew has finally found time for romance?"

"Miss Bennett is the head of our internal forensic audit," Julian stated smoothly, loud enough for nearby board members to hear. "In fact, she has just completed a comprehensive review of our urban housing foundation. We're presenting her findings to the board on Monday morning."

Richard’s knuckles whitened slightly around his martini glass. "Is that so? How commendable. We must always ensure... accountability."

Bennett held Richard’s gaze, refusing to flinch. "Yes, Mr. Vance. Accountability is the cornerstone of any legacy. Wouldn't you agree?"
