Chapter 2 - Echoes in the Gilded Cage

Morning filtered through the heavy velvet drapes in muted shades of gray and gold. Bennett woke without the burning fever, though a lingering weakness weighed on her limbs. The sprawling penthouse was dead silent, save for the rhythmic tick of a grandfather clock in the corridor.

She dressed in the understated linen trousers and silk blouse Julian’s housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, had laid out for her. When she stepped into the dining library, Julian was already seated, a porcelain cup of black coffee beside an open leather folder.

"Sit," he said without looking up. "Eat the porridge. It's bland, but it won't upset your stomach."

Bennett pulled out a mahogany chair and sat opposite him. "You spoke of survival last night. But my family didn't raise me to hide behind closed doors while someone else takes the blame."

Julian raised his gaze, measuring her. For the first time, Bennett noticed faint violet rings under his sharp, analytical eyes. He hadn't slept. "Your grandfather worked for mine for forty years," Julian stated, closing the folder. "He was an honest man. The only honest man on the docks during the strike of '78. You inherited his spine, Bennett. But honesty in this city is often mistaken for an invitation to be crushed."

"And what are you, Julian?" she countered softly. "The hammer or the anvil?"

A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. "I am the wall keeping the roof from collapsing on people who don't even know it's raining. The discrepancies you found in the foundation’s books weren't clerical errors. My uncle, Richard, has been laundering offshore subsidies through the urban youth centers we sponsor."

Bennett gasped. The youth initiative was the pride of the city, providing education and shelter to thousands of underprivileged children. "He would steal from them?"

"Greed doesn't have an aesthetic preference," Julian said coldly. "He found out you requested the original ledgers. The carafe was his warning. Next time, he won't use a dose designed merely to mimic cardiac arrest."
