Chapter 11 - The Rebuilding

Bennett did not move back into the penthouse immediately, choosing instead to reclaim her independence in Brooklyn while accepting the position to lead the newly formed Vance Community Trust. They met not as master and subordinate, but as partners navigating uncharted emotional territory.
Their first real date took place in a small Italian trattoria in Little Italy, away from cameras and high-society gossip. Julian arrived in a simple dark wool coat and sweater, looking remarkably relaxed.
"No bodyguards?" Bennett asked, raising an eyebrow as he pulled out her chair.
"They're across the street," Julian smiled sheepishly. "Old habits die hard. But tonight, I am just Julian."
Over plates of homemade pasta and a bottle of rustic Chianti, they talked about things that had nothing to do with balance sheets or boardrooms. Julian spoke of his mother, an artist who had died when he was young, leaving behind a garden that he still maintained in upstate New York. Bennett spoke of her father, a carpenter who taught her that a house was only as good as the love poured into its joints.

"My grandfather used to say," Bennett shared, tracing the rim of her wine glass, "that true wealth is measured by the number of people who sleep soundly because of you."
Julian looked at her across the flickering candlelight, his gaze profound and unclouded. "Then I have spent most of my life as a beggar. But with you, Bennett, I am beginning to understand what wealth actually means."
