Chapter 8 - The Weight of an Empire

Security officers, accompanied by federal agents who had been positioned discreetly throughout the museum, swarmed the corridor. Richard was swiftly subdued, read his rights, and escorted out through a private exit, away from the prying eyes of the press.

Bennett approached him cautiously, carrying two cups of chamomile tea. She offered one to him, which he took with a quiet nod of gratitude.
"It's over," Bennett said softly. "The federal marshals have the ledgers. Clara is safe in her dorm. Richard won't hurt anyone ever again."
Julian stared down at his cup. "It’s only beginning. Tomorrow the press will feast on our family name. The stock will plummet. Hundreds of employees will wonder if their livelihoods are secure."
"And you will guide them through it," Bennett said, stepping into his line of sight. "Because unlike your uncle, you actually care about the foundation beneath the empire, not just the gold leaf on top."

Julian looked at her then, his defenses completely down. "I never asked for this burden, Bennett. I stayed in this company to protect what my father built, but lately, I wonder if the cost of my humanity was worth it."
"Your humanity isn't lost, Julian," she whispered, placing a gentle hand over his. "You proved that when you pulled me out of that vault."
