Chapter 14 - Foundations of Hope

Six months later, the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the rebuilt East River community took place on a bright, crisp autumn morning. The decrepit, dangerous buildings had been completely replaced by modern, sunlit apartments, accompanied by a spacious community center, a library, and a landscaped public park where children could play safely.
Hundreds of residents gathered around the podium, cheering and clapping as the red ribbon fell away under the oversized scissors held by a local community leader.
Julian stood at the back of the crowd, dressed in a simple suit without a tie, Bennett by his side, their wedding bands catching the warm sunlight.
"Aren't you going to speak?" Bennett asked, looking up at him with amusement. "You funded half of this project out of pocket."
"They don't need a billionaire to tell them how to live," Julian replied, pulling her closer against his side. "This day belongs to them. We merely provided the tools to right a wrong."
An elderly woman, one of the longtime residents who had lost her apartment to the mold years ago, walked up to them. She looked at Julian, then at Bennett, her eyes shining with quiet tears of relief.

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," the woman said softly, reaching out to clasp Julian's hand. "Thank you for not forgetting us."
Julian bowed his head respectfully, returning her handshake with gentle warmth. "It was Miss Bennett who reminded me of what matters, ma'am. We are just glad you are home."
