Chapter 2 - The Red Line Drawn

Julian’s gaze shifted from Clara to his glowing screen. His eyebrows knitted together in confusion, then furrowed in sudden panic. ""What the hell does he mean, liquidity breach?"" he muttered, tapping rapidly.

Clara descended the stairs slowly, her hand gliding effortlessly along the mahogany banister. She had changed out of her silk blouse into a tailored dark sweater and slacks. Her posture was straight, shoulders square.

In the kitchen, Evelyn sat on a barstool, swirling a glass of Pinot Noir. ""There you are, Clara,"" she remarked, not bothering to turn around. ""Julian works sixty hours a week providing for this household. The least you could do is keep your personal family drama from spoiling our evening. Your father’s medical bills are not Julian’s responsibility.""

""You’re entirely right, Evelyn,"" Clara said smoothly, walking past her toward the entryway coat rack. ""Julian shouldn’t spend a single cent on my family.""

Leo scoffed from the dining table, his feet propped up on an antique chair. ""Finally got some sense knocked into you, huh?""

Julian didn’t laugh. He rushed into the foyer, his face pale, holding his phone against his ear. ""Answer me, David! Why is the escrow frozen? Who initiated the margin call?"" He lowered the phone, glaring at Clara with wild eyes. ""Did you touch my laptop? Did you mess with the corporate portal?""

""I don't need your laptop, Julian,"" Clara replied calmly, picking up her trench coat. ""You told me twenty minutes ago: your money is yours, mine is mine. I’m simply honoring your boundary.""

""What are you talking about?"" Julian sneered, stepping closer, attempting to tower over her as he always did. ""You make pocket money from your freelance coding. Stop acting cryptic.""

""Ask David who holds the junior convertible notes on your Series B round,"" she said.

Julian froze. His phone slipped slightly in his grip. The convertible notes were held by Vanguard Horizon—the mysterious fund that had never requested a board seat, never interfered with operations, and only demanded a right of first refusal.

Before Julian could process her words, another loud knock echoed from the front door. Julian frowned, turning the brass handle. Standing on the porch in the rain was an official courier holding a Manila legal envelope addressed directly to Julian Vance.
