Chapter 9 - The Eviction

Forty-eight hours later, Clara stood in the foyer of the multimillion-dollar penthouse she had purchased under Julian’s name as a wedding gift.

Moving crews were carefully packing up her personal art collections, designer wardrobes, and antique books. In the living room, Evelyn was sitting on a sofa, looking disheveled, her expensive jewelry gone, replaced by an expression of bitter exhaustion.

""You are a monster, Clara,"" Evelyn whispered venomously. ""Julian gave you status. He took a quiet, nobody girl from a broken family and made you the wife of an elite executive. And you destroyed him overnight.""

Clara didn't stop inspecting the inventory clipboard. ""Status, Evelyn? Julian was two days away from bankruptcy when I met him. I paid off his gambling debts. I financed his firm through shell entities so his pride wouldn't be wounded. I cooked your meals, tolerated your daily insults, and let you treat me like a maid in my own home.""

""This is Julian's home!"" Evelyn screeched, standing up. ""His name is on the deed!""

Clara turned to face her, handing over a stamped county deed document. ""Check the land registry, Evelyn. The property was purchased with funds from the Mercer Trust. The trust holds the primary lien. Since Julian committed mortgage fraud by declaring false income assets, the bank has foreclosed. The property belongs to me.""

Two bailiffs in uniform stepped through the open front doors.

""Mrs. Evelyn Vance?"" the lead bailiff inquired.

""Yes?"" she stammered, looking between the officers and Clara.

""You have twenty minutes to collect your personal clothing and vacate the premises. All furniture, fixtures, and vehicle leases tied to the Vance trust are under court freeze.""

""Where am I supposed to go?"" Evelyn gasped, panic finally breaking her aristocratic facade. ""My friends... my bridge club... I have nowhere to sleep tonight!""

""You have relatives in Ohio, don't you?"" Clara remarked mildly, walking toward the terrace doors. ""Perhaps they can provide the charity you so proudly denied my father.""

Clara stepped out onto the wide glass balcony. Below her, the glittering city lights stretched to the horizon. The cold night wind whipped through her hair, carrying away the lingering scent of Julian’s expensive cologne that had suffocated the apartment for half a decade.

Her phone chimed with an email notification from the legal board of Apex Global.
