Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Warehouse

The rain intensified as the town plunged into the darkness of late afternoon. Clara sat in the rear of the sedan, staring at the digital dossier Marcus had compiled on Vanessa Price. Vanessa was Julian’s former university sweetheart—the one Evelyn had always praised at dinner parties as 'the one who got away.'
""Julian didn't just hide profits,"" Clara murmured, watching raindrops race across the tinted window. ""He was financing a shadow life.""
""According to the manifests, Julian and Leo purchased three commercial freight units under Vanessa’s name,"" Marcus explained, pointing to satellite captures on the screen. ""They weren't just parking cash. They were moving high-end imported luxury goods off the corporate books to evade capital gains taxes and Vanguard's profit-sharing triggers.""
""So Julian was committing corporate fraud while lecturing me on financial dependence,"" Clara said, a dry, humorless smile touching her lips. ""Call Inspector Harris at the Financial Crimes Unit. Tell him we have an anonymous tip regarding the North Harbor freight depot.""
""Clara, if Julian goes down for customs fraud and grand larceny, the company's valuation will crater completely,"" Marcus warned. ""You won't recover your initial investment.""
""I don't care about the valuation, Marcus,"" she replied coldly. ""I care about the truth. Drive to the harbor.""
Thirty minutes later, the sedan parked in the shadows behind a row of rusting containers. Through the downpour, Clara could see lights glowing from inside Warehouse 14. A silver sports car was parked outside—Julian had bought that exact car two months ago under the pretense of a 'company fleet addition.'
Clara, accompanied by two private security personnel, walked up to the side entrance. The metal door was slightly ajar. Inside, voices carried over the hum of industrial dehumidifiers.
""Julian is locked up! You idiot!"" Leo’s frantic voice echoed off the concrete walls. ""His bail was denied because of the flight risk Clara’s lawyers argued! We have to clear these crates tonight before the forensic accountants show up!""

""Relax, Leo,"" a woman's cool, calculated voice replied. ""Julian gave me power of attorney over the foreign accounts months ago. Even if Clara takes the company, she can't touch the offshore reserves. We’ll liquidate the inventory and leave on the morning flight to Panama.""
Clara stepped through the shadows into the harsh halogen light. ""I wouldn't start packing your suitcases just yet, Vanessa.""
