Chapter 3 - The Coldest Signature

""Julian Vance?"" the courier asked, rain dripping from the brim of his cap.
""Yes,"" Julian said, his voice tightening. ""What is this?""
""Certified legal notice from Vance & Sterling Partners. Sign here, please.""
Julian scribbled his signature with an unsteady hand, ripped the envelope open, and pulled out the crisp white sheets. Evelyn and Leo walked into the hallway, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere.
""What is it, darling?"" Evelyn asked, peering over his shoulder. ""Another merger draft?""
Julian’s lips parted, but no sound came out. The top document was a formal Demand for Immediate Debt Acceleration. Below it was a petition for legal separation and division of marital assets, filed electronically less than thirty minutes ago. Attached to the filing was an audit disclosure showing Clara as the sole beneficiary of Vanguard Horizon and its parent enterprise, Mercer Capital.
""Mercer Capital?"" Leo chuckled nervously. ""Wait, isn't that the conglomerate trying to buy out the entire logistics district?""
Julian turned toward Clara, his eyes bloodshot, his voice cracking. ""You... you own Vanguard? You’ve owned half of my firm this whole time?""
""Forty-two percent,"" Clara corrected, sliding her arms into her coat. ""And as of eight minutes ago, Vanguard exercised its right to recall the debt due to a material breach of executive ethics.""
""What breach?"" Julian shouted, panic breaking through his polished exterior. ""I haven't breached anything! We have an exclusivity agreement with Apex Global!""
""Check clause 14B of your angel term sheet,"" Clara said softly, stepping toward the door. ""Any act of domestic assault or criminal misconduct by the founder triggers immediate debt default and forfeits founder voting control. The kitchen security system you installed last month records in 4K resolution, Julian. Cloud storage. Synchronized directly to my offsite server.""
Julian’s face drained of every ounce of blood. The arrogance that had sustained him for years vanished, replaced by sheer horror as he remembered the blow he had struck in the kitchen just forty minutes earlier.
""Clara, wait,"" Julian begged, lunging forward to grab her sleeve.

She pulled away before his hand could touch her fabric, her eyes as cold as slate. ""Don't touch me again. If you step within three feet of me, my private security will ensure you spend the night in central booking.""
As she pushed open the door, a sleek black sedan pulled up to the curb, its headlights cutting through the drizzle. Two private security operatives stepped out, holding open umbrellas.
