David Marcus Vance was born at six pounds, eight ounces, with dark eyes and a full shock of brown hair. Clara held him against her chest, exhaustion washing away in tears of relief.
Marcus stood by the bed, his broad shoulders relaxing for the first time in years. He placed a gentle finger into the infant's palm, smiling as the baby's tiny hand clamped shut around it.
"He looks like David," Marcus said softly.

Outside the hospital window, the sun rose golden over the ocean, burning away the lingering coastal mist and welcoming the new day.
